About Norton Anti-Virus

With the many types of anti-virus software
it is helpful to read a brief description of what the different types do and how they can be beneficial to you and your computer.

Norton Anti-virus

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus software is perhaps the world's most trusted antivirus solution. It is available for both Windows PC's
and Macintosh (Symantec Antivirus for Macintosh - S.A.M). Norton AntiVirus is a very reliable and easy-to-use anti-virus product. It's the best anti-virus product for catching viruses in downloaded files and E-mail. Norton AntiVirus is also more expensive than McAfee VirusScan although not by much
and the added abilities of Norton can easily make up the difference.

Norton AntiVirus includes many tools that can be run in the background
including watching for suspicious PC activity and automatically checking downloaded files for viruses. Norton AntiVirus is also automatically configured to handle E-mail virus scanning for email messages coming into your computer
as well as those you send. This process automatically scans and cleans both incoming and outgoing email
stopping viruses from infecting your computer or spreading to others. It removes viruses automatically
without interrupting your work and prevents infections during real-time online chats
and also detects viruses in instant-message attachments. Because so many viruses and internet worms are now spread using email and Instant Message Systems
this is extremely valuable and necessary protection.

Norton Installation

Installation is simple. Simply install the CD in your CD drive
and the installer will launch automatically. The installer should ask you if you want to do a pre-install scan of your system for viruses. This is a very good thing to do. Once this is finished
the installation will proceed
and you can accept all the defaults without worry. Once the installation is complete
you'll be prompted to go online and get up-to-date virus definitions. DO NOT skip this step. Having up-to-date virus definitions is essential to the performance of any antivirus software.

Normal Use

Norton is a very hands-off program. Pretty much it is an install and forget program that looks after itself. It will automatically notify you if there is anything that you need to do. If a virus is found
the software will try to automatically repair the file
if it can't
it will place the file in a safe 'quarantine' zone
and let you know. In addition to looking for known viruses
the Norton Antivirus Bloodhound feature tries to spot new viruses and worms by their behaviour that is common to such nasty programs.

Checking your system and downloading updates are two things you need to do regularly. Norton Antivirus makes them painless by setting up a full system scan once a week and checking for new updates (both to the software
and virus definitions) whenever you're online. These simple update scans hardly slow down your PC down at all.

Overall
Norton Antivirus is an excellent way to guard against viruses. It is the system that I recommend to my clients most often
and that I use personally.

A Tale of Two Regeds Registry editors

Tech support tells me to type 'regedt32' as opposed to 'regedit' to access the registry from the command line (Start > Run). I question the use of 'regedt32
' but he says to do it anyway. Whenever I use the registry editor
I recall this incident and never look up the tale of the two regs... until now.

Regedt32.exe is an alternative registry editor available with Windows NT/2000 with features of its own. Regedt32.exe does not support importing and exporting registration entries (.reg) files. Regedit has limitations of its own as quoted here:

"You cannot set the security for registry keys. You cannot view
edit
or search the value data types <>REG_EXPAND_SZ and <>REG_MULTI_SZ. If you try to view a <>REG_EXPAND_SZ value
Regedit.exe displays it as a binary data type. If you try to edit either of these data types
Regedit.exe saves it as <>REG_SZ
and the data type no longer performs its intended function. You cannot save or restore keys as hive files."

Research indicates regedit has:

  • a better search tool

  • bookmarking of subkeys

  • opens to last edited subtree
    export and import capabilities

  • all keys are visible from a window similar to Windows Explorer

Regedt32 (pre-WinXP) can:

  • run in read-only mode

  • allows you to edit values longer than 256 characters (who wants to do that???)

  • displays subtrees in their own windows

  • modify access permissions to subtrees
    keys
    and subkeys

In WinXP and Server 2003
the two have been replaced by a new version of regedit that has features from both. Try typing 'regedit' and 'regedt32' to see what happens. They're the same. To prove it
while in 'regedit
' select 'edit' and you'll see 'permissions.' This is a feature that was only available in the old 'regedt32' and not 'regedit.'

Technically
regedt32 is a small program that runs regedit. So when typing 'regedt32
' it takes you to 'regedit.' The destination is the same either way. So type whichever is easier for you to remember. Regedit is easier for me - I had to play with the spelling of the other version until I got it right.

Now I remember that tech support was checking to see if the permissions were properly set and that was why we used 'regedt32.' However
someone forgot to update the script or tell him that it didn't matter anymore when a user had WinXP. Tech support always asks what operating system at the beginning of the call
so he knew.

More registry editor resources: Microsoft has a knowledgebase article on the differences between the two. Windows IT Library has a feature comparison chart dated 2000
so it's way old
but it will satisfy curiosity. Here's a list of registry editor alternatives for those who wish to try something different. For tweaks
tricks
and hacks

A Perfectly Clean Uninstall

Uninstalling a Windows application leaves multiple traces such as abandoned registry keys
configuration files and shared libraries that are no longer used by any application. When you are looking for a perfect solution to your problem
you are typically downloading and testing dozens of different applications distributed on the try-before-you-buy basis. After you complete your search
you'll decide on just one application
and will want to remove the other products you've tested. But do you realize how much garbage they leave behind even after being 'completely' uninstalled?

If you install a comprehensive suite created by a big-name company
you're getting the best quality software that surely knows how to behave and how to clean up after itself
right? Wrong! Many if not all products leave behind them multiple traces that are more than likely to make your computer behave odd
or even lead to problems that are impossible to predict and hard to resolve.

Want examples? How about a firewall that forgets to remove a system-level driver that filters IP packets? After uninstalling the product
the driver just sits there
doing nothing except slowing down the performance of your PC. Try another one of those firewalls and stack an extra system-level driver on top
and you'll get connectivity problems that are very hard to resolve if you're not an experienced system administrator.

Did you use any tools to make backups of your CDs and DVDs? There's a bunch of tools on the market that shamelessly leave behind the drivers they use to access the disks directly
and
let's nail it
circumvent their copy protection. Each of these drivers slows down access to optical disks and makes reads and writes less stable. You might get many coasters just because of these extra links in the driver chain.

Simple utilities created by small companies and independent software vendors are very likely to leave traces behind in many places on your computer. Being time-limited by their definition
they try to hide information about their installation date and usage in obscure places
making it deliberately difficult to trace and clean up. There's nothing wrong with protecting intellectual property
but what if you test a bunch of applications
and decide on a single app to do the job? Do you really have to bring all the garbage in house in order to buy just one tool?

If you start thinking that the only way to keep your computer clean is by not installing anything on it
think again! There's a great solution to these kind of problems made by ChemTable. Reg Organizer helps you clean sweep your computer and keeps it in pristine clean condition by removing any traces left behind after you uninstall a product.

It works simply
quietly
and with no magic. Reg Organizer makes snapshots of your system before you install an application and immediately after. Comparing the two snapshots discovers all changes that were made to the files on your hard drives and Windows Registry settings. Uninstalling an application in Reg Organizer sweeps your computer pristine clean
allowing for no traces to be left behind on the PC and effectively making it the way it was before you installed the application.

No more abandoned files
no hidden registry settings
and no quirky drivers to harm your PC performance! With Reg Organizer you can try as many tools
utilities and packages as you please without slowing down your PC or littering its hard disk.

Are you a Reg Organizer user already? Open Reg Organizer
open the "Mode" menu
and select "Application Uninstall". From there you will be able to remove applications and all of their files
registry settings
and other traces
effectively restoring your computer into the state it was in before installing the program.

A new unique MultiCore AntiVirus AntiSpyware product

Sunday, 6 September 2009

A new unique MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product reliably defends PC against computer malware and on-line threats at unsurpassed
highest security levels.

A MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product ( http://www.nuwavesoft.com ) effectively prevents
stops
and eliminates computer viruses and spyware. The revolutionary underlying software technology enables multiple antivirus and antispyware scan-engines running on the same PC. A MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product is truly unique
because it offers unprecedented security benefits of running multiple antivirus and spyware scan-engines simultaneously
in parallel
and without performance degradation! No other computer security product for PC in the world is capable of or offering that to date.

What multi-core antivirus and antispyware solution means? Comparatively speaking
you can imagine all the benefits of having computer processor with more than one CPU core. The modern multi-core computer processors allow smoother performance and much increased speed of computer applications
which translates into better overall experience delivered to the end-users.

Conceptually similar
a multi-core antivirus and antispyware solution runs multiple antivirus and spyware scan-engines simultaneously and in parallel. As result
it delivers exceptional performance while providing the strongest protection against malware and on-line threats. With total four anti-malware scan-engines employed
MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product continuously scans PC at the same speed as traditional single-core solutions from competitors
while delivering unprecedented four times the protection! Currently
MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product utilizes world’s leading two antivirus and two antispyware scan-engines: Frisk ( http://www.f-prot.com )
Norman ( http://www.norman.com )
Lavasoft (http://www.lavasoft.com )
and Sunbelt (http://www.sunbelt-software.com ).

Why end-users need a multi-core anti-malware solution? Are traditional single-core computer security products not enough? Well
the truth of the matter is that none of the traditional single-core computer security products can provide 100% protection alone. There are at least seven major computer security vendors in the world who claim that precisely their brand is the world’ leading solution. And yet multiple tests performed by credible and independent computer security certification institutions ( such as http://www.virusbtn.com
http://www.westcoastlabs.org
and so forth) do demonstrate year after year that even the very best individual single-core computer security product can only deal with approximately 98% of the existing computer viruses and spyware. Of course
there is no conscious end-user who wants to be unprotected and to face remaining 2% computer viruses and spyware and yet they all do
unfortunately. A MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product eliminates this problem! Each and every individual scan-engine differs from the other. And all scan-engines have their own specific pros and cons in certain areas
such as heuristics
scanning speed
dealing with unknown malware
and so forth. So
all end-users inherently tied up with those pros and cons of the underlying single-core scan-engines. A MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product eliminates this problem too! Also
concerned computer users sometimes install more than one computer security solution their PCs. Little do they know that the different security products do not live well with each other on one PC - they constantly conflicting and causing instabilities and a sizeable performance hits too. It is not uncommon for end-users to have PC crashes when the two or more antivirus or other security products start fighting for control over PC. By engineering the four security cores together
MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product eliminates these problems completely!

A MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product is uniquely powerful
because by running multiple antivirus and spyware scan-engines simultaneously and in parallel – it creates unsurpassed synergy of combined strengths provided by each individual scan-engine! The new integrated multi-core solution ensures smooth and problem-free operation of all four antivirus and antispyware scan-engines in real-time. There are no conflicts
no compatibility problems and no fighting for control over PC among the cores. The four engines are working in synergy continuously scanning and protecting your PC much better and even faster than many of the traditional anti-malware products with just one core! And unlike many traditional PC security products
MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware works transparently and is compatible with third-party antivirus
antispyware and firewall applications. And of course - all four security engines receive online updates in real-time
ensuring uninterrupted
the highest reliability
and up to date security measures.

A MultiCore AntiVirus & AntiSpyware product brings the PC security to a truly new height!

A Guide To Free Screensavers

There are millions of Screensavers available on the Internet. Almost all of these can be downloaded and installed easily. These are usually categorized according to themes. Nature lovers can choose picturesque locations. Fish lovers can choose from different kinds of aquariums with multi-colored fish that are swishing through colored water. Those who really like adventure sports or aircraft can choose from a wide array of moving images and clips of death-defying stunts. Screensavers can also be slide shows that have various pictures of movie celebrities
sportspersons and politicians.

However
some precautions need to be taken before downloading Screensavers. The most important one is that Screensavers must be downloaded from trusted sites. It’s also always a good idea to scan Screensavers for viruses and other potentially dangerous elements
such as spyware and adware. If an anti-virus is already installed on the system
a right click enables a menu which provides for a ‘scan with…’ option. This option can be selected and left-clicked to check the selected download before double-clicking it and installing it.

Sometimes Screensavers are extremely graphic-intensive. This means that they contain so many graphics that they are huge files. Huge files take a lot of space on the computer when they run
and make the computer work so much harder and so much faster than normal that the computer freezes. Then the computer needs to be restarted and all the unsaved information on the computer -- such as open files that were being worked on before the Screensaver was activated – is lost.

Some Screensavers also make the hard drive of the computer crash
causing irretrievable data loss. Therefore
it is important for users to download Screensavers that are compatible with the configuration of their computers. This means that the speed of the processor in the computer
and the free space on it
should be sufficient for the Screensaver to be downloaded
installed and run.

Many users like to create their own Screensavers
often with the visuals and audio of their choice. Some software applications facilitate this. Out of these
some can be freely downloaded from the Internet. However
these should be downloaded only from trusted sites
and should be supported by the configuration of the user’s computer. Once downloaded
these should also be scanned for viruses and other common infections. When installed
these programs enable the user to combine images
video clips and audio clips to create a personalized Screensaver
sometimes even for circulation amongst friends and family.

A Guide To Computer Aided Design

Computer Aided Design (CAD) is a form of software automation that uses various computer-aided design tools that helps engineers
architects and other professionals in the design activity purposes. It is considered to be both software and special-purpose hardware. In product lifecycle management
the use of geometric tools plays a significant role. The CAD is available in various packages ranging from 2D vector based drafting systems to 3D parametric surface and solid design modelers.

CAD allows you to prepare fast and accurate drawings. Virtually anything can be constructed and built as a design model developed in the CAD system. The flexibility to alter the drawings is performed very easily with a minimal effort. It is also referred as Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD). It is sometimes translated as computer-assisted or computer-aided drafting. The tool provides you a better and the faster way of developing the drawings with better creativity.

CAD is used in major areas like applications that involve computer graphics

solid modeling
solving by constraints
architectural purpose and VLSI design. Other fields that use the CAD are Architecture Engineering and Construction
Building Engineering (AEC)
Mechanical CAD (MCAD)
Electronic and Electrical (ECAD)
manufacturing process planning
and digital circuit design.

CAD uses four basic phases that are used for designing and manufacturing. They are the requirement phase which collects the basic requirements and conceives the basic idea. The designing phase uses detailed component modeling and assembly modeling. The development phase uses engineering drawings. The tool design is used in the manufacturing phase.

Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
CAD/CAM applications
CAD scanners
CAD resources
and the software used by these computer-aided techniques all enable the drawing to be developed quickly and easily. General purpose CAD software

A guide of Outlook Express backup

Most small companies and home users don’t need to buy an expensive solution for data backup. They can simply copy important files to a CD or DVD
and if an information loss occurs
they can get it back easily.
If it is simply to copy documents
photos and other files
not the same is for emails
attachments
address book
stationery and other related information from your Outlook Express email client.
This article will explain how everybody can create a manual Outlook Express backup copy (because Outlook Express don’t offer a built in backup function) This email program is usually installed with the Windows operating system and is probably among the most commonly used email programs today.

1. Backup email messages
In Outlook Express
emails are stored in files with DBX extension. The easiest way to find these files is to open Outlook Express and from menu select Tools Options Maintenance and click the Store Folder button. Here you can find the path to the folder containing your emails.
This procedure works for all kind of email: SMTP / POP3
IMAP
MAPI
or even the Hotmail Account (some messages might be stored only at the Hotmail server).
To save all your emails and attachments you should copy all the DBX files from the folder.

2. Account settings:
Details about your mail and news accounts are stored in the registry. To find them
start RegEdit and select the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager” key from the left panel. To save this data
from menu select: Registry Export Registry File. Save the file to a name like "accounts.reg".

3. Mail Rules
The Outlook Express mail rules are stored in the registry
in the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities” key. To save this data
from menu select: Registry Export Registry File. Save the file to a name like "rules.reg".

4. Address Book
The backup of address book is easy to do. It is stored in files with WBA extension. To find the location where address book is stored
you should open Outlook Express and from menu select File Export Address Book and select the comma separated text file as your output format. Click Export
select the folder where the backup will be saved and set the name for the backup file. After that click Next and choose the fields you want to include in your backup. Click Finish and your backup will be ready.

5. Stationery
The Outlook Express stationery location is stored in a registry key. To find it
you should open RegEdit
find “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Stationery” key and look at “Stationery Folder” value. There you will find the path to stationery folder. To save the stationery
you should copy all files from that folder.

If you think that manual backup is too hard
you can use a backup software tool
which can make the job much easier. Outlook Express Backup Expert is one product that can be used to easily create Outlook Express backups. It can save your emails
attachments
address book
signatures
blocked list
mail rules
stationery
accounts and settings. The biggest advantage to use automatic email backup software is the schedule function
which will create backups at specified time intervals
without user action. The downside of using a automatic email backup utility is that it costs money
usually about 20-30 USD as one time payment
while the manual backups are of course
free.
The conclusion is that email backup is a critical operation for every user.

A free evaluation copy of Outlook Express Backup Expert can be found at: http://www.bodrag.com/outlook-express-backup.html

A Computer Firewall is Your Primary Defense against Virtual Attacks

Thursday, 3 September 2009

If you have any personal information on your computer at all and access the Internet it is vitally important that you consider the benefits of a computer firewall. Many people lock their homes
lock their cars
keep a watchful eye on their children
and yet leave the bank accounts
personal information
and all kinds of other information vulnerable and exposed through their personal computers.

A virtual attack can be just as devastating financially and emotionally as someone breaking into your home. They are allowed access to secrets you may have shared in confidence with online friends or even offline friends that you correspond with online
they will have passwords for financial and banking accounts
they will know where you buy your coffee; they can learn where your children go to school. The information we have on our personal computers is staggering in terms of personal security nightmares and yet so many people take no steps to secure this information from prying eyes by investing in a simple computer firewall.

The amazing thing is that you can even find free computer firewalls available online if you know where to look. I highly recommend paying for a computer firewall though if you have little knowledge of the inner workings of your computer. If you’re going to secure your families secrets you may as well invest in a very good program with constant updates in order to do so.

A computer firewall isn’t just a nice thing to have on your computer; it is a vital line of defense for you and your family. Keep this in mind when choosing the best computer firewall for you. Remember you want to have a service that will provide updates and keep up with evolving technology that would harm your computer or steal your personal information.

A Better Workflow for Digital Photographers

Achieve the most from digital photography and enhance digital pictures with SnapTouch.

A digital camera is only as good as the pictures it takes. Experienced photographers spend hours touching-up images to achieve the best visual results and preparing the pictures for printing. Digital photographers make countless choices deciding which camera and settings to use to take a picture
and what software and which tools to use to enhance the picture afterwards. At each post-processing step
the tools you use to enhance the picture affect the image
enhancing or degrading the result.

Regardless of your choice of photographic software
one thing is certain. The computer and image editing software are an essential part of the digital workflow. Computer-edited digital pictures appear in newspapers and glossy magazines
billboards and advertisements. If you have just one image
spending an hour in Adobe Photoshop to get the perfect print makes sense. If you take hundreds of images
however
taking care to enhance each individual image consumes so much time and effort that many prefer to forget the whole idea. But what if you had a proper tool to make your digital workflow simple
quick and effective?

SnapTouch (www.snaptouch.com) takes care of the entire digital workflow quickly and efficiently. SnapTouch takes care of every step after you take a picture from helping you transfer pictures from the camera into the computer to preparing already enhanced images for printing.

Transferring images from a digital camera might be easy
but SnapTouch also makes it smart. It can automatically sort pictures depending on the day they were shot
naming and placing them into folders accordingly. Specify your own transfer scenario
and your digital pictures will be sorted
named and placed depending on your very own criteria.

Correcting and enhancing images is the second step of your digital workflow. During this step
you compensate and correct gamma and exposure
adjust brightness and contrast
rotate and flip pictures
remove red-eye and resize your pictures for Web viewing or printing. SnapTouch is designed to handle jobs to enhance bunches of multiple images while maintaining the highest quality through the entire workflow.

The third step of your digital workflow depends on what you're planning to do with the image. If you're up to making a Web album or archiving images on a disk
use SnapTouch to stamp your pictures by imprinting the date they were shot
naming the pictures or embedding your signature. You can specify your own font and color for the stamp
making your digital pictures appear as works of art.

If you're going to print a multitude of images
consider the different aspect ratios of your digital pictures and the paper they will be printed on. The two common aspect ratios are 4:3 and 3:2. Why gamble on what will be cut out of your photographs in the printing lab when you can specify your own crop in no time? 9 Tips To Keep Windows XP Running Smooth

9
Tips To Keep Windows XP Running Smooth

There are many things that cause a computer to be sluggish from software to hardware. It can be too small a hard drive or not enough RAM. It can be anything from BIOS and/or Operating System Settings to programs that are eating up your CPU and RAM (no matter how much you have). Or it can be your network.

Personally
I work my computer like a young mother with a house full of kids 12 to 18 hours a day.

That mother needs to unwind at the end of the day and so does my computer and probably yours too.

Here are 9 Tips in the order they should be completed that can help keep your computer happy and working without complaining:

1
This is so basic I shouldn't need to say it
Keep Which Ever E-Mail Program You Use Cleaned Out. I have clients who are always complaining
but who refuse to dump years and years of accumulated e-mail.

2
Make sure you have a good anti virus program (Only one per computer please)
have it up to date
and auto monitoring.

3
Make sure you have a good anti spy ware program (Only one per computer)
have it up to date
and auto monitoring.

4
Run Disk Clean Up Daily (Start
Programs
Accessories
System Tools
Disk Clean Up - a box opens - make sure each box is checked
click 'OK' - a box pops up - Click Yes).

5
Delete Cookies and Cached Files Daily (Start
Control Panel -if you have not done it yet
click 'Switch To Classic View'
Internet Options - a pop up box will appear - Delete Cookies
Click OK
Click Delete Files - check 'Delete All Offline Content' - Click OK
Now Set Your Clear History to no more than 7 Days - if you haven't used it for a week you probably won't miss it - Click OK)

6
A very important step almost everyone misses: Empty The Prefetch Folder (Start
My Computer
'C'
Windows
Prefetch Folder
Edit
Select All
File
Delete - pop up box appears - Click Yes
Close Windows Window)

7
Empty Recycle Bin. For the sake of brevity
I am assuming everyone knows where it is and how to empty it.

8
Scan Hard Drive 'C' (Start
My Computer
Right Click 'C' - box opens - Click Properties at the bottom - another box opens - Click Tools
Click Check Now
Make sure both 'Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' are checked
Click Start. Get a cup of java (oh
black
thank you) and Wait !

9
Defrag Computer (Start
Programs
Accessories
System Tools
Disk Defragmenter - window opens - Select 'C' Drive
Click Defragment). Pop a top and Wait !

The last two steps (8 and 9) can take awhile if they have not been done recently. I complete this entire routine on my computer just before I stop work for the day everyday and the entire sequence takes no longer than 20 minutes and often much less.

7 Top Tips for Microsoft Word Users

Tuesday, 1 September 2009

Microsoft Word is an extremely easy tool to start using. However there are lots of interesting features “under the bonnet”. Some of these features can save you a lot of time when producing documents. I am amazed that they are not as well known as they should be. These top seven tips are my favourites and I cannot imagine life with Microsoft Word before I found them!

1. Oops. I left Caps lock on!

We all know that feeling. You are typing away merrily and then you look up at your screen to realise that you had hit the Caps Lock button. Now everything you just typed is in the wrong capitalisation. Don’t despair. Highlight the text and goto the Format menu and select Change Case from the drop down menu. Then just select your desired case from the list provided
which will probably be tOGGLE cASE.

2. While we are talking Cases.

Some useful shortcut keys:

Highlight your text and click Control Shift A to set it all to Upper Case.

Control Shift K will set it to Small capitals.

3. Moving quickly around your document.

Try these shortcuts to get around your document quickly.

Control Alt Page Down: Next Page
Control Alt Page Up: Previous Page
Control Home: Go to the top of your document
Control Alt End: Go to the end of your document

Also
with later versions of Word there is a clever little button beneath the vertical scroll bar called the Select Browse Object. Click on this and select one of its options to browse through your document going straight to the next table
graphic
heading etc.

4. I’m lost. Where was I?

Forgot where you just made a change in your document? Try pressing Shift + F5.
This will take you back to the last place you made a change. You can do this two more times to go back to the two previous changes.

5. One click find

One of the annoyances of the Find screen when you are looking for occurrence of text in your document is the fact that it always seems to appear right over the text your are looking for! However there is no need to keep the screen open. Once you have used the Find command to find the first entry
close the Find screen. You should notice that the small double arrows below the vertical scroll bar on the right of Word have changed to blue. Click on these to go up and down your document finding your text.

6. Numbering the rows in your tables

How many times have you created a table where you just want the first column to be a numbered list. It’s easy to do this quickly. Simply select the column and click on the Numbering button on your Word toolbar. The same thing works if you select a row and want to have numbering across your columns

7. Fast Page breaks

My final tip is really simple and is probably the one I use the most. To insert a page break quickly
simply use CTRL + Enter

5 Tips For Buying Accounting Software

Whether you are shopping for accounting software to help budget your personal or business expenses
you may find that managing all of your files with a single program helps you to save time and know exactly where your money goes. If you are familiar with the accounting process
you already know how complicated ledgers
account statements
debits and credits can be. In an effort to simplify the accounting process
a number of manufacturers have created software specifically designed to help make your life a little easier.

Before deciding on any one particular accounting software program
keep the following tips in mind:

$Because many popular online software specialty stores allow for product feedback from customers
you will have the opportunity to read reviews that may help to make your decision easier based on the experiences by others who have already used the accounting software in question. Pay close attention to customer reviews when shopping for software.

$When you consider the purchase of any type of software
including that of accounting
you will want to make sure that it is compatible with your computer and that all PC requirements are met before purchasing the product. Many software programs require a specific type of processor
available memory
etc. In order for the software to function properly your computer will need to be able to handle all of the applications contained therein. By being familiar with your computer’s configuration
you will be able to make a better selection when it comes time to purchase your new accounting software.

$When shopping for accounting software
read about the program’s description and capabilities. You will need to make sure that you are either already familiar with the application or that you will be comfortable in learning how to use it. The reason is because many retailers will not accept software that is being returned if it has already been opened. So
before you buy
consider downloading a trial version or purchase an accounting software program that you are already familiar with.

$Purchase your accounting software from a company that has been in a business for awhile and one that has a good reputation. This will ensure prompt customer service
reliability
product assurance and a timely shipment. By purchasing software from a reliable and established business
you will also gain the peace of mind in knowing that the title is authentic and not an illegal copy. The most effective way of checking out a business’s reputation is through the Better Business Bureau.

$Learn about the company’s return
refund and/or exchange policy. Although most retailers will not refund the purchase if software has been opened
they may be willing to exchange it for the exact title if the program is defective or damaged.

5 Quick Dirty Tips For Using Microsoft FrontPage To Make Better Looking Websites

Building professional looking websites can definitely be challenging.

While anyone in the world can learn the basics of html and get an operational site up and running on the internet
making a site that looks attractive can be another story altogether!

The internet abounds with cheap-looking mom and pop sites that look like they were designed by a first year html student.

Do you want your web sites to look like that?

I hope not. Especially when it is so gosh-darn easy to make your sites look more professional using Microsoft FrontPage.

Here are 5 ways FrontPage can instantly make your websites look more professional.

1. High Quality Photos And Clipart Collection - Few people actually know how great the Microsoft Clipart collection is. This collection of images is created and maintained by one of the richest corporations in the world. It absolutely crushes any other collection I've seen on the internet in terms of quantity and quality of available pictures.

Best part...It's free for FrontPage owners!

There are over a million clipart pictures and photos
all searchable by keyword.

And if you have an active internet connection
you can search this online gallery from within FrontPage while you work.

Adding some original looking
nice photographs to each page of your site can instantly take up space
add a professional look. This is better than simply having the affiliate link.

2. The Interactive Button Features - In Microsoft FrontPage 2003
there is a new feature called 'Interactive Buttons'.

Basically
you can choose from over 200 different types of ready-made buttons to use on your website. These buttons look fantastic and can be created and edited with 1 click.

Before you would have to pay a graphic designer or spend hours creating these types of rollover buttons yourself
but FrontPage 2003 does it all for you.

Using these buttons can add a big dose of professional looks to your site in a matter of seconds.

3. Using HTML Tables - It goes without saying that the content of your webpages should usually be placed in some sort of html table. FrontPage makes it easy to create tables and add content
simply by using a button on the toolbar.
You can use this to center the content on your page and create neat looking tables once you get the hang of it (it is easy). This way
your content isn't scattered all around the page.

4. Included Content - This feature of FrontPage allows you to make changes to hundreds of webpages
simply by changing the content of one html page. For example
I mentioned above that you should use the interactive buttons feature to create a navigation system. You can also 'include' this navigation system on all of your webpages with a special feature in FrontPage.

This way
if you want to add another category or link to all of the pages on your site
you simply need to open up one webpage
the 'navigation.htm' page
and change the contents of that page.

The changes will immediately be reflected on hundreds of pages on your website.

You can see this is 10
0
more easy than going through and manually editing the links bar on each page!

5. Web Forms - Using the web forms feature of FrontPage
you can create a feedback form for your website. Not only do these forms look nice
but they also can help you to alleviate your spam problems.

Many a webmaster has paid extravagant fees to other companies for form processing
when it has been available to FrontPage users free and easy for years.

You can create any kind of feedback form in a matter of minutes
and have the results of the form submission sent to any email address that you choose.

To conclude:

I have just given you 5 very valuable tools for creating professional looking websites fast.

While it may not sound like much
consider this:

Let's say you spend $50 and get a nice looking banner graphic for your new affiliate website.

Then you create a neat html table
past in the banner
and use the interactive buttons feature of FrontPage 2003 to create a navigation system.

You can use the same general template for each new page you create (for articles
and other information about the product you are promoting).

After that
you top each page off with a nice looking photo or two from the Microsoft Clipart collection.

Using these basic techniques
in only an hour or 2 you can easily put together a professional looking website site.

You can get more Microsoft FrontPage website building tips via the tips newsletter at http://www.fphowto.com

5 Minute Guide to ERP

Information technology has transformed the way we live and the way we do business. ERP
or Enterprise Resource Planning
is one of most widely implemented business software systems in a wide variety of industries and organizations. In this short article
we’ll try to concisely explain the basic yet important concepts relevant to ERP.

What is ERP - ERP is the acronym of Enterprise Resource Planning. ERP definition refers to both ERP software and business strategies that implement ERP systems. ERP implementation utilizes various ERP software applications to improve the performance of organizations for 1) resource planning
2
management control and 3) operational control. ERP software consists of multiple software modules that integrates activities across functional departments - from product planning
parts purchasing
inventory control
product distribution
to order tracking. Most ERP software systems include application modules to support common business activities - finance
accounting and human resources.

ERP Systems - ERP is much more than a piece of computer software. A ERP System includes ERP Software
Business Processes
Users and Hardware that run the ERP software. An ERP system is more than the sum of its parts or components. Those components interact together to achieve a common goal - streamline and improve organizations' business processes.

History of ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is the evolution of Manufacturing Requirements Planning (MRP) II in 1980s
while MRP is the evolution of Inventory Management & Control conceived in 1960s. ERP has expanded from coordination of manufacturing processes to the integration of enterprise-wide backend processes. In terms of technology
ERP has evolved from legacy implementation to more flexible tiered client-server architecture.

Benefits of ERP - ERP software attempts to integrate business processes across departments onto a single enterprise-wide information system. The major benefits of ERP are improved coordination across functional departments and increased efficiencies of doing business. The implementation of ERP systems help facilitate day-to-day management as well. ERP software systems is originally and ambitiously designed to support resource planning portion of strategic planning. In reality
resource planning has been the weakest link in ERP practice due to the complexity of strategic planning and lack of adequate integration of ERP with Decision Support Systems (DSS).

ERP Failures - We couldn’t conclude our brief guide to ERP without mentioning ERP failures. The failure of multi-million dollar ERP projects are reported once in a while even after 20 years of ERP implementation. We have identified the four components of an ERP System - 1) ERP software
2
Business Processes that ERP software supports
3
Users of ERP systems
and 4) Hardware and Operating Systems that run ERP applications. The failures in one or more of those four components could cause the failure of an ERP project.

4 Smart and Free Programs For Your Computer

Sunday, 30 August 2009

One of the fun parts of owning a computer is
of course
access to the internet. The worldwide web is chock full of useful information
readily available at your fingertips! It is also home to potentially lethal viruses
many of which can wreak havoc on your system within moments. The following four programs can help you avoid trouble; best of all they are absolutely free.

Firefox – a web browser for the ages. Okay
a web browser that beats Internet Explorer by preventing pop ups and harmful scripts from being downloaded to your computer. Lots of nifty features too
including tabbed browsing
live bookmarks
and tons of add-on features.

Spybot Search and Destroy – gets rid of adware
spyware
and malware. Blocks the installation of spyware before it occurs; works in conjunction with anti-virus software
not as a replacement for one.

AVG Antvirus – offers basic antivirus protection including scanning email attachments for viruses and scanning of all hard drives
removable drives
and external drives on your computer. A paid version does some additional tasks and includes technical support.

Zone Alarm – if you don’t have a firewall installed on your computer
you are opening yourself up to potential catastrophic security breaches. With Stealth Mode enabled you can search the internet in private
away from the intruding eyes of those who might want to steal your important information.

As with many freeware programs
“pro” or professional versions of the software are sometimes available to give computer users a maximum amount of protection
for a price. Still
all four of these programs have something to offer and are worth exploring. Your computer safety and privacy is essential
insure it today by downloading the programs that are right for you.

13 Great Firefox Extensions For Web Professionals

Like most web developers or SEO professionals
I use a vast array of tools to get the job done. I use a combination of desktop and web applications
some purchased and some free. Everyone I know has downloaded a free copy of Mozilla Firefox
but few realize that by installing some of the 1
500
free extensions they can eliminate the need for most of the other applications they currently use. Below are my 13 favorite extensions for web professionals (in no particular order):

HTML Validator (http://users.skynet.be/mgueury/mozilla/) – validates web pages to the W3C HTML standards with a simple green check in the corner of the page if the page validates
a red check if it doesn’t
and a yellow exclamation point if there are warnings. It also includes an enhanced view of source code that allows you to see where errors are within the code.

FireFTP (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/684/) – free
secure
cross-platform FTP client that provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers. This eliminates a piece of software for those of you who use a separate program for FTP.

Professor X (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2823/) – lets you view header information without having to view source code. The page “slides” down and Professor X shows you the contents of the page's head element
including Meta
Script and Style content.

NikkelWHOIS (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2646/) –view the WHOIS information for any page by clicking the button on the top-right of the browser.

IE Tab (http://ietab.mozdev.org) – sick of swapping between Internet Explorer and Firefox when testing out a web page you’re developing? With IE Tab you can view Internet Explorer in a Firefox Tab!

FireBug (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1843/) – an advanced debugger console that lets you monitor your JavaScript
CSS
HTML and Ajax.

Codetech (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1002/) – web page editor that has the feel of Dreamweaver. An amazing extension for anyone doing web design that doesn’t want to fork out a few hundred dollars for Dreamweaver.

Server Switcher (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2409/) – easily switch between sites on your development and live servers by clicking the switch server icon.

SEO for Firefox (http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/seo-for-firefox.html) – pulls useful market research data right into Google's and Yahoo!'s search results
including Google PR
Age
links
Alexa rank
WHOIS
and more. It also adds a few helpful links to the top of the search pages
including Google Trends
Google Traffic Estimator
and the Overture View Bid tool.

Yet Another Window Resizer (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2498/) – allows you to resize browser window to default screen resolutions.

AdSense Preview (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2132/) – preview the Google AdSense ads that would appear on that page. This is incredibly useful if you are considering putting AdSense on a page and don’t want to go through the hassle of signing up for an account and putting the ads up just to see what type of ads will show.

Screen grab (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1146/) – takes a screenshot of the webpage and saves it as an image file. This saves a ton of time compared to the method I used to use – take a screenshot and open Adobe Photoshop to crop the image.

Server Spy (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2036/) – indicates what brand of HTTP server (Apache
IIS
etc.) runs on the visited site on the lower-right side of the browser.

13 Comparisons of Vista vs Tiger

Competitive and fast are two terms that are applicable to the world of computers. Constantly changing and evolving computer systems bring many advantages to the users and techies alike. The race for supremacy between the yet to be launched Vista (scheduled for 2006) and Mac OSX Tiger began in 2003 with Microsoft’s announcements of plans for an integrated desktop search functionality in Windows Vista.

While opinions vary and are really personal choices in many ways
the following sums up the functionalities between Vista and Tiger.

1. Vista has a completely redesigned look and feel; it is aesthetic
functional
and exciting according to industry sources. Mac Tiger on the other hand was always famous for its technology and aesthetics which are clean and clutter free. In fact
many of the visual effects that Vista has like translucent icons
high resolution
and animation effects have been integral to Tiger for more than four years.

2. Vista is yet to resolve problems caused by underlying windows
while Tiger has fine tuned the bleed caused by windows beneath the surface ones.

3. The 128 x 128 pixel icons of Tiger have better rendition and clearer resolution than the 32 x 32 or 64 x 64 pixel icons of Vista. However one will only know whether Vista will have resolution independent vector graphics once the final version comes to the market.

4. Both Vista and Tiger have closely similar desk top search functions. The only immediate difference is that in Tiger the filtering becomes operational only after creation of a Smart Folder or using the shortcut keys. The Virtual Folder of Vista is identical to the Smart Folder of Tiger.

5. Vista has next generation features
where the system has enough inbuilt intelligence that organizes data. This fine tunes any searches that need to be done. In comparison to this
the Tiger has an old fashioned system with no specials.

6. Vista supports meta data processing while with Tiger meta data can be created or edited only by using document processing applications.

7. Vista permits users to visually locate files while Tiger does not. Image previews in Tiger are turned off by default.

8. As far as security is concerned the Tiger is by far superior to Vista. Since the Tiger user base is small the number of hackers and attackers are fewer as compared to Windows.

9. User accounts and log ins are safer in the Tiger system and Microsoft plans to incorporate similar systems in Vista to strengthen security.

10. Vista has new systems similar to Tiger that will enable users to assert parental locks or blocks. Parental controls help limit computer usage by children protecting them from several dangers.

11. Security in Vista includes inbuilt protection against rogue attacks
malware
spyware
adware and so on. In the case of Tiger its security system has remained secure and unbreached. Whether Vista will earn the same distinction will be known only after it comes into use.

12. Both Vista and Tiger have great networking features making both immensely usable both at home and in businesses. The Tiger is simpler while Vista is a bit more complex to use.

13. The hibernation mode works instantly in Tiger and Vista is also trying to match its facilities.

While the above draws tentative comparisons between the two systems a true evaluation can only be made once Vista is released in its completed version and comes into use.

10 Tips To Buying Software Online

Buying software online can be tricky
especially if you are new to shopping via the internet. Whether you are upgrading an existing software package or looking for a specific program to install
the process will be a lot less complicated if you know what to look for.

Software Buying Tip # 1
Read customer reviews. Many popular online stores
such as Amazon
allow users to leave their comments about a particular product. Reading other customer reviews may help to make your decision easier because it gives you an idea of others who have experienced the product firsthand.

Software Buying Tip # 2
When considering any type of software
make sure that it is compatible with your computer. Most software requires a specific processor type
such as Pentium or Celeron
and a certain amount of free hard drive space. The reason is because
in order for software to function properly at quickly
the computer must be able to handle the application. By being familiar with your computer’s configuration
you will be able to select the right software.

Software Buying Tip # 3
Become familiar with the software by reading it’s description and capabilities. Before purchasing any type of software
you should make sure that it is exactly what you want or will enjoy learning. Often times
after software is opened
there is no refund policy for buyer’s remorse.

Software Buying Tip # 4
Purchase software from a reputable company. This will ensure customer service
reliability
quality products and timely shipment. By purchasing software from a reliable source
you will also ensure that the title is authentic and not an illegal copy. The best way to check out a business’s reputation is through the Better Business Bureau.

Software Buying Tip # 5
The best part of shopping for software online is the competition. Because there are so many retailers
prices are more competitive than if only one store had the software that you want. Shop around and compare prices before making a final decision.

Software Buying Tip # 6
When making a purchase online
consider using a credit card. Most credit card companies provide a dispute resolution process
which is beneficial if the product is not delivered
is not as advertised or is damaged and the company will not stand behind the transaction.

Software Buying Tip # 7
If purchasing from another individual
such as often the case with online auctions
confirm that the software has all manuals and/or product keys to ensure proper installation.

Software Buying Tip # 8
Learn about the company’s return
refund and/or exchange policy. In many cases
especially with software
the company may refuse to accept the product back for a refund. However
there is always the possibility that a program is damaged or doesn’t function properly
in which case the store should honor the purchase with an exchange for the same title. When buying software online
it’s best to purchase from a store that is reasonable when it comes to exchanges if not refunds.

Software Buying Tip # 9
When purchasing software online
take a moment to look at the company’s shipping costs
methods and availability of a way to track the package following shipment.

Software Buying Tip # 10
Common payment methods include credit cards
checks and/or money orders. If you want to purchase software online
you will need to do so from a company that accepts a convenient payment method. If you do not have a credit card
most companies will accept a mailed payment. Most companies
however
recommend not sending cash.

10 Tips For Using Adobe Photoshop

Like a brush is to a painter an essential skill in the field of graphic design is Photoshop. The software offers increased productivity as well as flexibility. The features include aspects like file browser
vanishing point tool
smart sharpen filter
noise reduction filter
smart objects
as well as camera workflow enhancements. Photoshop offers professional photo editing features
digital imaging
as well as non destructive editing.

There are so many hidden features and insights to software
that it is often impossible to know them all.

1. There is a hidden option using which you can simulate bold and italic formatting styles for fonts that do not have these options. Click the button on the type tool option to bring up the character palette. Then select text and click the arrow in the upper right hand corner of the palette menu where faux bold and italics are present. However you will not be able to warp type when formatting has been applied.

2. One can quickly flip through blend modes while trying out effects by using the keys “shift+ to change to next mode and shift- to go to the previous mode.” When a painting tool is active this shortcut will change the blend mode of the painting tool. However
